Reading this page
- Which areas does this cover?
- Everything the U.S. Energy Information Administration publishes weekly retail prices for: the United States, five regional groupings with their sub-regions, nine states (Texas, Florida, Ohio, Minnesota, Massachusetts, Colorado, New York, Washington, California) and ten metro areas (Houston, Miami, Cleveland, Denver, Boston, New York City, Chicago, Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles).
- Why are only nine states listed?
- EIA surveys a limited set of areas for its weekly series rather than all fifty states. We only show what EIA publishes, so a state that is missing here is missing from the source, not overlooked. The regional pages cover the rest of the country in broader groups.
- Which tracked state is cheapest right now?
- Texas at $3.704 per gallon for regular (week of October 19, 2026). The most expensive is California at $6.031, a gap of $2.33 (our calculation).
- Which tracked metro area is cheapest?
- Houston at $3.710, and Los Angeles is highest at $6.021. A metro area can sit well above or below its state: compare each metro page with its state.
- What does the regular grade price mean?
- It is the weekly average retail price per gallon of regular gasoline, as published by EIA. Midgrade, premium and diesel are on each area page. See About & method for how figures are sourced and what we calculate.
